Richard Versalle

Great American tenor Richard Versalle made his debut as Tannhäuser in 1985 in a new production at the Bayreuth Festival, repeating his performance with the company in 1986, 1987, 1989 and on tour in Japan.

He debuted as Florestan in Fidelio at the Vienna State Opera (followed by a 20-minute standing ovation).  He bowed as Tristan at the Deutsch Oper Berlin.

Mr. Versalle sang many leading roles at the Metropolitan NYC, Florence, Madrid, Hamburg and Sydney Opera companies.

He is the solo tenor on Klaus Tennstedt's recording of the Mahler Eighth Symphony.

He appears on two videos: The Bayreuth Tannhäuser and a Tristan and Isolde with Monserrat Caballé from Madrid.

In addition to his signature operatic roles (Canio, Radamès, Otello, Tristan, Tannhäuser, Peter Grimes), Mr. Versalle had an enormous concert repertoire.

He died tragically during a 1996 performance at the Metropolitan Opera.
