The Paul Manz Organ Series
Final concert of the season: May 3, 2011
April 30, 2011 -- The program opens with Renaissance dance music. Sweelinck's Balletto del Granduca is a secular set of variations perfect for a spring day in some royal court. But Lebegue had the cathedral in mind when he wrote his rollicking variations on the ancient Easter hymn O filii et filiae (O sons and daughters, let us sing).
Théodore Dubois wrote sweepingly dramatic music for La Fete-Dieu (The Feast of Corpus Christi), incorporating two pieces of ancient plainsong, Ecce panis and Lauda Sion.
The free concert will finish with Bach's majestic Prelude & Fugue in E-flat Major, known as "St. Anne" for the hymn tune featured in the fugue: O God, Our Help in Ages Past. Wikman calls the fugue "a masterpiece of musical invention," built up in three layers representing the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
